Why Shin Tae-yong Exploded at the End of the Match
South Korean coach Shin Tae-yong was left fuming after his team failed to win the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. His comments to the press after the final whistle tell us why he was so angry:
Unsatisfied Performance
Shin was disappointed in the team’s performance, especially in the second half. It was clear that his players had not been able to match their opponents for sustained periods of the game:
- Poor attacking play – There were many missed chances and too few shots on goal.
- Inconsistent pressing – His players failed to pin Bosnia back in their own half.
- Lack of determination – They appeared to have taken their foot off the gas for the second period of the game.
Time Wasting
Bosnia were guilty of time-wasting tactics that frustrated the South Korean team. Shin was especially angered by the lack of a response from the referee to this tactic:
- Deliberate delays – Bosnia were slowing down the game in order to protect their lead.
- Unprofessional behaviour – Some of their players were faking injuries in order to take time off the clock.
- No disciplinary action – The referee failed to book any of the Bosnia players for their cynical behaviour.
Conclusion
Shin’s behaviour at the end of the match was understandable. His team had been outplayed for much of the game and then robbed of time to mount a comeback by Bosnia’s time-wasting tactics. It is clear why this was the final straw for the South Korean coach.
